Sizing a grow tent fan and carbon filter

The CFM calculation step by step, which fan size fits which tent, why a controller is the part worth paying for, and when you can skip the carbon filter.

A grow tent without moving air is a warm, humid box, and warm humid boxes grow mould faster than plants. Ventilation is the least glamorous purchase in the kit and the one that decides whether the expensive light gets to do its job. Here's how to size it without guessing.

What the fan is actually for

An inline fan pulling air out of the tent does three jobs at once:

  1. Removes heat from the light — the main reason tents overheat.
  2. Removes humidity that plants transpire, which is what keeps mould and rot away in flower.
  3. Pulls in fresh CO₂ through the passive intake vents, which the plant needs to photosynthesise.

It's an exhaust fan. Air goes out through it, and fresh air comes in through the tent's low vents to replace it. You don't need a second fan blowing in unless the tent is very large.

Sizing: the calculation

Work out the tent's volume in cubic feet, then how many times a minute you want to replace that air.

Step 1 — volume. Length × width × height, in feet.

  • 2×2×5 ft tent = 20 cu ft
  • 2×4×6 ft = 48 cu ft
  • 4×4×6.5 ft = 104 cu ft
  • 5×5×6.5 ft = 163 cu ft

Step 2 — base rate. A full air change every minute is the rule of thumb, so the base CFM equals the volume.

Step 3 — add for resistance and heat. Every restriction makes the fan work harder, and LEDs add heat:

For a 4×4 with a filter, one bend, and a 450 W LED in a normal room: 104 × 1.25 × 1.10 × 1.35 ≈ 190 CFM. Round up. A fan that comfortably does 250+ CFM on a controller will run quietly at half speed and still have headroom for July.

Buy the rated CFM above what you calculated, then run it slower. A fan at 50% is quieter, lasts longer, and gives you somewhere to go when it gets hot. A fan at 100% all day is a fan that's too small.

Controllers: the part worth paying for

A fan with a temperature and humidity controller turns ventilation from a thing you fiddle with into a thing that runs itself: set a target, and the fan speeds up when the tent gets warm or humid and idles when it doesn't. That's the difference between a tent that swings 10 °F over a day and one that holds steady. Cheap fans with a manual dial work, but you'll be adjusting them constantly as the seasons change.

Look for an EC (electronically commutated) motor with PWM control — they're quiet at low speed, sip electricity, and don't hum or buzz the way a dimmed AC fan does.

The carbon filter

If the plants smell — and many do, in flower — a carbon filter on the fan's intake side scrubs the exhaust before it leaves the tent. Sizing is simple: the filter's rated CFM must be at least the fan's rated CFM, and matching diameters (4-inch fan, 4-inch filter) avoids an adapter that chokes airflow.

Set-up order inside the tent: filter → short duct → fan → duct out. Hang both at the top where the warm air collects. The filter's activated carbon lasts 12–18 months of continuous use before it stops scrubbing; humidity above 70% shortens that.

If your plants don't smell (herbs, most vegetables, seedlings), skip the filter entirely and enjoy the quieter, cheaper fan.

Ducting, briefly

Insulated or plain aluminium ducting both work; keep runs short, keep bends few, and keep the duct stretched out rather than compressed — a scrunched-up duct is a 50% airflow penalty. Every bend costs you, so if the exhaust has to snake around a room, size the fan up a step.

Circulation fans are a separate job

An inline fan changes the air; it doesn't move it around. A small clip-on or oscillating fan inside the tent, pointed across the canopy rather than at it, stops still pockets of humid air forming between leaves and strengthens stems. One 6-inch clip fan per 2×2 of floor is plenty. Never point one directly at a plant for hours — constant wind stress does more harm than good.
