4-inch vs 6-inch inline fan: which does your tent need?

Real airflow numbers after the filter and ducting, which size fits which tent, why the controller matters more than the diameter, and the two mistakes people make.

"4-inch or 6-inch?" is the single most common question about tent ventilation, and the confident answers online are usually wrong in one direction or the other. The 4-inch is not "too small for anything real" and the 6-inch is not "always worth it". Here's the actual comparison.

Rated CFM is measured with nothing attached. A carbon filter, two bends and a few feet of duct take a third or more off that, which is why the "comfortable tent size" column is smaller than a naïve volume calculation suggests.

When the 4-inch is the right answer

A 2×4 tent is about 48 cubic feet. With a filter, a bend and an LED light, it wants roughly 90–100 CFM. A 4-inch fan on a controller does that at half speed, silently, with headroom for summer. Putting a 6-inch on a 2×4 means a bigger filter, bigger ducting, more money, and a fan that runs at 25% forever — which some cheaper fans can't do smoothly.

For a 2×2, 2×4 or 3×3, the 4-inch is correct, not a compromise.

When you need the 6-inch

A 4×4 is 104 cubic feet and wants 180–250 CFM after adjustments. That's the 4-inch running flat out in summer with no headroom, which is loud, hot for the fan, and the first thing to fail. The 6-inch does it at half speed.

For a 4×4 or bigger, the 6-inch is correct. So is the 6-inch for a 3×3 with a very hot light or in a warm room — the extra headroom is worth having.

The same logic scales: a 5×5 or a 4×8 wants the 6-inch working, or an 8-inch loafing.

The controller matters more than the size

A 6-inch fan with a manual dial is worse to live with than a 4-inch on a temperature-and-humidity controller. The controller is what turns "I set it to 6 and hope" into "it holds 78 °F and 50% on its own". If the budget only stretches to one upgrade, buy the controller before buying the bigger fan.

Look for EC motors with PWM control in either size. They're the ones that stay quiet and smooth at low speed; an AC fan on a voltage dimmer buzzes and eventually burns out its bearings.

Filter and ducting: match the size

Whichever you pick, buy the filter and ducting in the same diameter. A 6-inch fan through a 4-inch filter is a 4-inch fan with extra noise; adapters exist but every one of them costs airflow. Keep ducting runs short and straight — each 90° bend costs about 10%.

The mistakes

  • Buying the 6-inch for a 2×4 "to be safe". It'll idle at 20–25% and you've paid for a filter and ducting you didn't need.
  • Buying the 4-inch for a 4×4 "to save money". It'll run at 100% from July onward and be the loudest thing in the house.
  • Skipping the controller in either size. That's the part that makes ventilation not-a-chore.
  • Running the intake through a second fan. Passive intake vents on the tent are enough below 5×5; a second fan just complicates the pressure balance.
